Gilles Peterson Radio Show A Must Hear Event

To give you a brief history on how I got introduced to such great music. My roommate in Cusco, Santi worked with this Australian guy Sam who has traveled all over the world and listens to everything. He told Santi that Gilles Peterson radio show was the best show in the world to hear trend-setting music from all over the world that you probably wont hear anywhere else. Santi eventually told me and I tried I listened. I want to say it was a little over a year ago. It just so happened to be an episode with Andreya Triana as a guest dropping two tracks- Lost Where I belong and Town Called Obsolete ( I eventually bought the album the day it came out and love it). But from that episode I was hooked.

I must say its one of the few things that I look forward to every week; Tuesday nights (could be Wednesday morning depending on where in the world you live; his broadcast our from London, UK).

I’ve listened for a year now and its only been one episode where  I was scratching my head like what the fuck am I listening too.  Other than that every episode has been on point. I say that because I’m listening to it now and he’s played music from Japan, Canada, Nigeria, UK, U.S., and various places and it all blends together so well. It’s all fresh and funky.

I don’t personally hear this on my local radio and know I never will. He’s probably put me on to 100+ new artist in the past year. I love music like never before because of his selections.

Check him out, you can listen to his most recent episode for 7 days on what is called the Iplayer  http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00yyd4f#synopsis

This dude has saved me from passing out at my desk at work, kept me motivated to do some work, and knows how to rock a party (even a party of 1).

NBA Trades Highlights

The NBA surely  has been full of life the past week. First with all-star weekend and all its events and now with trades. Having the trade deadline expire in February is strategically a good move for the league I must say. Certain moves increase viewer-ship in anticipation of the playoffs. There have been a shitload of trades Today and I’ll include the ones of the past few days if you have slept under a rock.

Utah Jazz trade PG Deron Williams to New Jersey Nets in exchange for PG Devin Harris, PF Derrick Favors, and 1st round picks in 2011 and 2012. That’s a solid trade for the Nets. The Jazz seem to have lost all hope off contending without Jerry Sloan. That was my team too.

Phoenix Sun trade  PG Goran Dragic to the Houston Rockets in exchange for PG Aaron Brooks. That’s a solid trade cause Aaron Brooks is more of a baller than Dragic

The Houston Rockets trade SF Shane Battier to the Memphis Grizzlies for  Hasheem Thabeet and a protected first round pick. That’s a solid deal for both clubs. A first rounder for Battier is good. He’s one of the most consistent players in the league.

The LA Clippers traded PG Baron Davis to the Cleveland Cavilers for PG Mo Williams and SF Jamario Moon. Looks good on paper for both teams but all these players been pronged to injury and slacking compared to last year.

Washington Wizards trade PG Kirk Hinrich to the Atlanta Hawks for PG Mike Bibby, SG Maurice Evans, SG Jordan Crawford, and Atlanta’s 2011 first round pick. This trade has to make  Kirk Hinrich feel good about himself. Damn is he really worth all that. Wizards been making some good trades all year, Atlanta I don’t know what the fuck there doing?

The New Orleans Hornets SG Marcus Thornton to the Sacramento Kings for PF Carl Landry. That’s a decent trade for New Orleans. Probably not enough to keep Paul for a long-term deal in the future.

Boston Celtic traded C Kendrick Perkins and G Nate Robinson to Oklahoma City Thunder for C Nenad Kristic, SF Jeff Green, and the rights to the L.A Clippersr 2012 1st Round Pick. It’s a solid move by the GM , sucks that Perkins is a fan favorite and has looked good since surgery but Kristic works his but off. Physically strong enough to bang like Perkins in the paint during the playoff. We have to wait and see. Getting a Clippers pick is good for business.

Boston traded SG Marquis Daniels to Sacramento for cash. Boston also traded C Semih Erden and PF Luje Harangody to Cleveland in exchange for a second round pick. All of these good moves, Daniels is out with an injury and is garbage anyway while Erden and Harangody are nothing but   expendable pieces that are there to play in the first place. They’re worth a second round pick.

Okhlahoma City traded SG Morris Peterson and PF DJ White to the Charlotte Bobcats for C Nazr Mohammed. It’s good for OC since they lost Kristic and needed size but it make me wonder who the Bobcats are trying to get in free agency if anyone…

Charlotte traded Gerald Wallace to the Portland Trailblazers for C Joel Pryzbilla and two first round picks. Hmm I dont know about that, they had to get that size back but Gerald Wallace has been pretty consistent since he been in the league. He’s a baller. But I get it, they have to try to get better before they get any worse.

Toronto Raptors trade Miami’s 2011 1st round draft pick in exchange to the Bulls for SF James Johnson. They should have traded for  something a little more relevant but who knows this may be something. They didnt loose much.

And of course the world knows that SF Carmelo Anthony, PG Chauncey Billups got traded to New York Knicks from the Denver Nuggets in conjunction with Minnesota Timberwolves being a third Party. Who they got traded for doesn’t really matter not to say they wont be significant for there respected teams there just not as significant as Anthony and Billups will ever be. Plus its to many players to type and I’m tired.

The Real Housewife Affect

So I’m one of the millions of  Americans snowed in there house bored as shit. I just so happen to turn on the Ellen Show and saw that she was making fun of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

I must admit I’ve watched a few full episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta in recent years and one episode of the Washington D.C. version. But mainly because some of the woman are down right gorgeous and it provided mindless entertainment to waste time.  (I haven’t gotten to the point where I Tivo or know what time the shows are scheduled.)

Watching the women’s reaction to a clip of the show made me question what benefits and/or liabilities  The Real Housewives of (Orange County, New York City, Atlanta, New Jersey, D.C., Beverly Hills, and Miami); VH1’s Basketball Wives (or every other show on VH1 (mainly dating shows)).

This exaggeration of the American woman’s life gives the appearance that these women used their looks to use men as  lottery tickets to live these elaborate lifestyle. Due to the lack of a format it makes marriage more comical than a commitment and motherhood second natured.

Regardless if they were accomplished before meeting there spouses or not (I’m aware that sounds quite sexes but the mere presentation of the show provides that bias). The shows don’t showcase  most them as wives, mothers or business women as much as socialites apart of an exclusive  sorority making it hard to take their drive seriously (some characters are exceptions to this rule).

It also give the appearance that hard work as well as an education an artificial supplement to good looks, catching the attention of a rich man, television executives, or casting agent. They don’t show the women devoted to much. I’m sure that is more of the networks doing than their own (of course for ratings purposes). Then again it is a simple reality show about there lives and maybe me expecting reality tv to have more substance is an exaggeration in itself.

Now I can’t blame these women for the lives they live. They were probably doing this before the cameras came into there lives. But I will question the purpose behind it? How much good is this doing to be on TV under these circumstances? Do executives understand how they are affecting the younger generation and changing the culture by shows such as these? Is the recipe for reality tv an exaggeration of the average persons life?

Music Podcast

Its been some months since I’ve been on here. I must say I’ve kept myself busy. Moved back to America from Peru. Now working in clinical  research and medicine. I like the work but it’s so repetitive and mundane at times. Fortunately internet radio has kept me sane in times where boredom could have caused me to discard things I have going for myself.

Listening to internet radio had me pondering how I could get music out to my friends and comrades. So I found this free podcasting software called Audacity, and I use it to make a playlist of my most recently played and purchased songs.

I listen to a lot of music, mostly singles rarely a whole album. My range is diverse: Dubstep, drum and Bass, downtempo, electronica, jazz, hip hop, acid, etc.

With music from all inhabitable continents the sounds are diverse and unlimited.  Enough people have enjoyed it to the point where I figured I should post them on here for those who come across to take a look.

I don’t have time to post the track listing but will do so ASAP: Just click on the link and wait for it to load in a new window.

Since I work in academic medicine now, I’ve named the playlist in certain terms as to the mood they bring:

Wyclef Jean will announce his candidacy for president of Haiti on Thursday on 'Larry King Live.'

Haitian born musician Wyclef Jean is said to announce his bid to run for presidency in his native land Haiti.  Jean whose family moved to the U.S when he was an adolescent rose to fame in the United States and Worldwide in the 90’s with super group The Fugee’s (including members Lauryn Hill and Pras), and has also spearheaded relief efforts after the 2009 earthquake. He is a highly respected musician, philanthropist, and humanitarian. He will be on Larry King Live on CNN Thursday night

“If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” the Haitian-born superstar said Tuesday night. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century.” He told Time.com

You can support his ongoing relief efforts at his charity at http://yele.org/

Hopefully he runs, Hopefully he wins. I’m sure his presence will lift the spirits, economy, and lives of all Haitians. Quite possibly making sure they are better after the reconstruction phase than they have ever been…

Entertainment News

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres is leaving American Idol!!! Oh well, she still has a really good, funny, and entertaining daytime talk show to go back too.

She said in a statement that while she “loved discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings”.

American Idol is still the most watched tv show in America but it’s not going to be the same with all the judges leaving unless they make it better by getting another great, popular TV personality like Ellen or just some legendary music figures (that may need a revitalization of their career).

In other news Alicia Keys…

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz

The woman I literally thought I was going become famous just to meet and become married too since 2001 has gotten married. WHY you do me that way Alicia.

And finally, this MOFO here,

Lindsay Lohan cries in court. Photo: 6 July 2010

I usually wouldn’t even mention this woman but I just want to point out the disparity in the justice system. I don’t know if its a California thing, a celebrity (people with fame and money) thing, or racial but how many people not involved in Hollywood can violate parole and only serve 13 days of a 90 day jail sentence. Granted it was non violent crime but so are most of the crimes that people go to jail for (i.e. drug possession).

I’m sure California like most states has a problem with overcrowded prisons but really, are female prisons that overcrowded like male prisons. I doubt it.

I know there are exceptions to every rule (almost) but damn celebrities be eating up all the exception and still getting the most money for bullshit products

Whats the Justice system about these days?

The same people who came from Cali that are protesting in Arizona the AZ immigration law should be protesting this shit as well because this is just as much of an injustice.

The use of celebrity to bypass normal rules and regulations. While the average person with the same offense is probably still in jail.

The New Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield is cast as the new Spider-Man.

Who is this guy? I only and lastly saw him in the movie “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus”. Which is a decent movie because of its non linear storyline, special effects, and list of male actors on its credits. But he was a jester in the film. From Jester to Spider-Man, What the Fuck. I guess I will be a millionaire someday if he can make it. I’m not saying I like Toby Maguire high-pitched voice as Spider-Man but dang who does the casting for the superhero films as of lately.

Marc Webb will be replacing departed director of the first three installments Sam Raimi.

Then again I don’t know why I am being so hard on a genre of movies that people go to see just for the special effects and not the acting.

Garfield mainly popular in the UK other credits include Doctor Who, Sugar Rush and Channel 4’s Red Riding trilogy.
