Amendments to Black History Month Curriculum

I think that it’s about time for Black History Month curriculum to be amended to make up for some of the Black Americans who have been overlooked in their accomplishments to our society. I think that young people have learned about the same 15 people (give or take 5) for the past 25 years. Just to name the familiar: Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. Dubois, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, George Washington Carver, and Rosa Parks.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t still talk about these great human beings because the further they move into our past the more likely we are to forget  or even disregard  their impact but there should be a new generation of people added. Closer in age and in some regards relevance to the people who will be studying them. At the least break the people down into various categories:  Science, Education, Humanities, Business, Entertainment, and even countries.

Here are some recommendations of who could (should) be included in new curriculum that might not be in schools already.

Business:

Reginald Lewis– Had the first black-owned company to have more than $1 billion in annual sales.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reginald_Lewis

Earl Graves Sr.Founder of Black Enterprise Magazine- which is one of the longest running black publications (1970) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_G._Graves,_Sr.

Chris GardnerThe man who the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ with actor Will Smith. Though he has a motion picture based on his life. His story is quintessential narrative to the American Dream. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Gardner

Entertainment:

Melvin Van Peebles– American writer/actor/producer/director who my be the most successful independent black film maker & play writers ever. Also speaks fluent French and has had books published in French which were later translated to English.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvin_Van_Peebles

Samuel L. Jackson-2009 Guinness World Records considers him the highest grossing American Actor. He has been in over 100 films (many of them being classic films i.e. Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, Loosing Isaiah, and the Star Wars prequels) and they have grossed over $7 Billion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_L._Jackson

Russell Simmons– Has had some of the most successful ventures of any Black American in the 20th and 21st century. Co-founder of Def Jam, Phat Farm, Rush Communications, executive producer of such hit shows as Runs House, Def Comedy & Def Poetry Jam. As well as acclaimed author and philanthropist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Simmons

Science:

Vivien Thomas– Pioneered treatment in Blue Baby  & Crush Syndrome. Has a film titled “Something the Lord Made” about his and Dr. Blalocks work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivien_Thomas

Rebecca Lee Crumpler– First Black Woman Physician.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Crumpler

Rebecca J. Cole– She was the second United States African-American woman physician and was the first Black woman to graduate from the Woman’s Medical College in Pennsylvania. Rebecca Cole received her secondary education from the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY — now Cheyney University). She graduated from ICY in 1863. Rebecca Cole received her medical degree from Woman’s Medical College in 1867.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Cole

These are just some of the countless of people that could and should be added to the curriculum for future generations to admire and research.

On top of adding new people to the curriculum it may be really good to describe how there are black people descending  all over the world especially in South America and the Caribbean due to the Slave Trade. Not only could it promote international travel & interest, it can show another countries struggles and progress; for example-Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba, Haiti, and other countries have more similarities than differences with black experience and black families in America and it has been that way throughout their history.

*Haiti http://articles.cnn.com/2010-04-02/world/uk.haiti.independence.declaration_1_jean-jacques-dessalines-governor-general-haitian-army?_s=PM:WORLD

*Brazil-Slavery in Brazil-Outside America it was the largest Slavery holding Nation in the Western Hemisphere http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Brazil

*Cubahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Cuban Afro-Cuban music and culture has a long influence across the globe.

Latin Pop Star Shakira To Open School in Haiti

Pop singer Shakira smiles during a ceremony before receiving the ILO (International Labour Office) medal for her support for Social Justice for Peace through her foundation in Geneva March 3, 2010. REUTERS/Denis Balibouse

Colombian pop star Shakira is set to build a school in the disaster torn country of Haiti. Barefoot Haiti school is a collaboration with her charity Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation and other NGO’s. Her charity already provides education, nutrition and psychological support to over six thousand Colombian children displaced by violence.

It’s good to see that people havent forgotten Haiti and still will put in the time, money, and effort to help. Starting with education! Which should be good for the hundreds of thousands of children who more than likely have nothing to do with their time but rebuild.  We can’t forget that a lot of people lost parents, their childhood, and hope for the future. This may give them at least some support in the right direction…

Way to go Shakira!

Brandy and Ray J to get show on VH1

R&B singer Brandy and brother Ray J are launching a new reality show called ”Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business” on VH1. Ray J being more famous for his television show “For the Love of Ray J” than his actual music career somehow has turned into a television reality superstar. While his sister Brady has been a pop icon (on and off) since my childhood. But regardless of this families fame. I still don’t want to watch them on TV.

Shows on VH1 and reality shows in general as of lately make you wonder why certain people get mindless airplay while others don’t even get noticed.

Really, what do I have to do to get my own show. I have nothing against both of the two artist but at the same time. I think two things when I think about them having their own show. I could be reading a book and whose the director and executives of the show, because I need to find them and propose some ideas to them. Considering that they are putting bullshit on television…

Though the show hasnt even come out. I can assume with a degree of accuracy that this show is not going to be a significant show in television history (for the right reasons at least).

Why do we pacify our senses and knowledge with mindlessness.

I’m all for more black representation on TV but damn, when is Cornell West, Wyclef Jean, or even Katt Williams  going to get their own show. Someone with some more importance on society, or at least someone funny.

Ellen DeGeneres and Madonna are 11th Cousins

PEOPLESCHOICE/ BRAZIL/

Ellen and Madonna are related!

Ancestry.com have found that Madonna and DeGeneres are related through a common 10th great-grandfather — a Frenchman called Martin Aucoin — so they are 11th cousins.

The new-found family connection between DeGeneres and Madonna is one of many interesting discoveries uncovered by Ancestry.com. In 2009, the family history Web site connected financier Warren Buffett to President Obama and also revealed that Emma Watson, who plays Hermione in the “Harry Potter” movie series, is related to a 16th-century woman accused of witchcraft.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley May 1

Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs) in his second fight out retirement will be against Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KOs). Both fighters have been on top of their respected weight class. Mayweather, the best american fighter pound for pound welterweight and Mosley who is one of the best fighters of his generation have avoided fighting each other for their entire careers, and maybe justifiably so, it may be one of the biggest pay offs for both fighters careers in a sport desperate for attention.

Mayweather agreed to the bout only after several weeks of negotiations with Manny Pacquiao failed to produce an agreement on what’s likely to be the richest fight in boxing history, if it ever occurs.
